About the Event

As parents, one of our top concerns today is our children's and teens' reliance on social media. What can we do about it? And is there an upside to this issue? Join us as Dr. David Bickham shares how children's and young adolescents' use of media and technology helps to shape what they believe, how they think, and who they will become.

Relying on evidence from academic and medical research, Dr. Bickham will help parents understand what makes technology so engaging for young people and how children can best balance their time on social media with their responsibilities at school and with family and friends.

David BickhamDavid Bickham, Ph.D. is an instructor of pediatrics in the Division of Adolescent Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital and a Research Scientist at the Center on Media and Child Health. His research explores media as an environmental factor that can influence children's physical, psychological, social and academic well-being.

His current work includes examining the pathways linking media use to obesity, investigating the effectiveness of in-school media reduction and education curricula, and exploring how young people's media use may contribute to mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety.
