About Us
Gateways Believes Every Jewish Child Deserves a Jewish Education.
Gateways offers programs and services to children with special needs and educational challenges in Greater Boston's Jewish day schools, congregational and community preschools and Hebrew Schools, and its own supplemental settings.
Gateways also provides professional development and ongoing coaching to teachers and administrators to learn strategies to teach every child in the classroom and to support all types of learners.
Teen volunteers throughout the wider community are offered opportunities to mentor children in many settings.
We currently offer the following programs:
Gateways Jewish Day School Programs help students thrive in Jewish day schools by providing on-site services that go beyond what the schools offer. Students in our participating schools receive assistance from speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, behavioral and vision consultants, and reading and learning specialists. Gateways works with students, teachers and staff to help generalize developmental, academic, and social skills and strategies. Gateways assists teachers with curriculum modifications and provide teachers with professional development. We currently work in nine Jewish day schools in the Greater Boston area.
Gateways Jewish Education Programs provide a Jewish educational experience to children, ages 2 to 17, who are not able to receive one in a regular classroom setting. Students include those with moderate to severe disabilities, such as development delay, autism spectrum disorder, hearing and visual impairments, cerebral palsy, and genetic disorders. Gateways offers a Sunday School program, a weekday B'nei Mitzvah class, a Teen “Mitzvah Mensches” class, and a monthly Jewish Holiday Program for Toddlers and Preschoolers and their parents.
The program supplements its professional staff with a cadre of teen volunteers who provide one-to-one support to each student. Classes are held in Newton, Massachusetts.
Gateways Special Education Services Programs
In May, 2009, the Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston announced they would cease funding the Bureau of Jewish Education. Gateways has taken on the expanded role of consultation and support to both synagogue and independent Hebrew schools, and Jewish preschools. We want to reassure the community that this is a natural expansion of our work and we are ready to build upon the many accomplishments of the BJE’s Special Education Services.
